Sitting down to read Julianna Zobrist’s faith-filled book is like sitting down to coffee with a friend — a vulnerable, exuberant friend who is wearing neon and doesn’t hesitate to tell you her latest struggles.

Review of "Pull It Off" by Julianna Zobrist

In “Pull It Off,” personal anecdotes about life as a traveling family provide a backdrop for how Zobrist anchors herself day to day. As a musician, a speaker, and the wife of a professional baseball player, the author finds herself and her family under constant scrutiny from strangers. Centering on God as her ultimate authority, Zobrist seeks to live bravely in what she feels called to do.

The chapter on image vs. identity hits me as particularly relevant, especially for those of us battling with social media. Questions such as “Why am I posting this?” and “Who am I trying to impress?” are given a new perspective. Zobrist urges readers to know what gives them meaning and to take joy in the expression of it.

The book has a sunny vibe even while examining the way we manipulate others to feel safe or to fit in. Zobrist encourages the reader to seek a redemptive worldview that accepts the positive and negative aspects of life as part of a beautiful, complete story.

At times “Pull It Off” seems a bit disorganized. Zobrist is passionate and intelligent as she encourages her readers, but the broad range of topics leaves me wishing for a deeper look at some subjects. I would love to see Zobrist write further about rediscovering self-expression and the tension between public image and identity.

I come away from “Pull It Off” feeling encouraged, hopeful, and more appreciative of the people around me. Thanks to Julianna Zobrist for the reminder that we are all reflecting the beauty and love of our Creator.

Pull It Off” is available at local and online retailers, including Target.
