Fair Trade Shoes

As I mentioned last week, I’m searching for new ways to incorporate fairly made products into my wardrobe, and my shoe shelf is ripe for improvement.

I buy cheap shoes, y’all. I hate spending more than $20 on a pair, so when I start to look for ethically made shoes I definitely suffer from a bit of sticker shock. When shopping for fair trade clothes and jewelry, I try to watch for sales and coupons so that the final purchase price is gentle on my wallet. I’m struggling to make this transition with shoes, especially since sales and discounts seem to be uncommon among ethical shoe brands.

Buying carefully crafted, ethically made shoes will be better for my feet, my sense of style, and my environmental impact. Hopefully I’ll take the plunge soon. In the meantime, here are some terrific shoe styles I’ve found during my research (from top left):

Bolivar Wedge – Nisolo Shoes
I love fair trade brands that make products able to stand on their own in a fashion-forward market. These killer wedges are crafted by artisan shoemakers in Peru.

tooTOOs Over the Rainbow – Sole Rebels
I fell in love with these adorable striped flats as soon as I saw them. They’re fairly made in Ethiopia and featured a recycled tire sole.

Mendez Flat – Nisolo Shoes
I want these versatile flats in every color. Nisolo’s headquarters are in Nashville, so I hope to stop by their showroom one day soon.

runAROUND FREEDOM – Sole Rebels
While their striped flats first captured my heart, these casual sneakers from Sole Rebels look great for bumming around the park with my boys.

Ninja Lizard – Olsen Haus
It just doesn’t get much better than fierce vegan heels dubbed “Ninja Lizard.”

All of these brands have terrific styles for men as well, so check them out if you know a guy in need of fair footwear. Oh, and if you are looking for ethical boot options for the fall, be sure to check out Let’s Be Fair’s excellent post.
