I picture the Advent season as a time of serenity and holy expectation, but every year I get caught up in a totally different type of expectation — perfectly wrapped gifts, perfectly baked goodies, a perfectly decorated house….a good way to go perfectly crazy.

One way I’m hoping to revive my holiday-weary heart is by shopping a wee bit more ethically.  I’m never going to win the “perfect gift-giver” award, and I find that adding some compassion into the shopping process eases the burden. In case ethical holiday shopping sounds like your cup of (fair trade) tea, I’ve collected a few of my favorite fair trade gift ideas to share.

Before you shop: Are you signed up for Ebates* and Amazon Prime? A free trial of Amazon Prime or Amazon Mom* is a great way to get free shipping through the holidays — Amazon has a good selection of items from fair trade brands like Mata Traders and Handmade Expressions, and through their Amazon Smile program you can donate .5% of your purchase to a designated charity. Ebates gives you cash back for your purchases from select sites, including a few fair trade favorites like Novica.

Hot Chocolate1. Winter Hot Chocolate
Gourmet hot chocolate from Vermont-based Lake Champlain chocolates is a thoughtful gift for a holiday party hostess or your child’s teacher. Several fair trade varieties are available, including traditional, Aztec, and mocha. Feel like splurging? Go for a gift basket. ($10.50 for 16 oz)

Wings and a Wand2. Wings and Wands
Know a fairy princess who needs her wings? This playful set is crafted at a fair trade workshop in North India and is available in a variety of colors. (~$34 per set, ships from Australia)

Shoulder Bag 3. Retread Shoulder Bag
Created from recycled inner tubes, this messenger-style bag looks tough enough to endure daily wear and tear or a global adventure. ($69)

Toy Tractor5. Wooden Toy Tractor
My toddler heads straight for these toys when he sees a similar set at his grandparents’ house. Handcrafted in India from sustainably-harvested wood. A fire engine and train set also are available. ($24)

Star Earrings5. Brass Star Drop Earrings
I love seeing major brands supporting fashion sustainability. These star drop earrings are a collaboration between Anthropologie and MADE, an ethical accessories brand. Handmade by artisans in Kenya, these earrings bring just the right amount of glitz to the holidays. ($32)

As we head into this season of thankfulness and hope, I’m grateful for the opportunity to purchase thoughtful gifts that enrich rather than exploit. I know my journey of conscious consumerism has a long way to go (as does my holiday shopping!), but every step is progress.
