Fair & Ethical Totes

Totes are everywhere this summer, no longer limited to the beach. In the past I’ve favored a large crossbody purse with many pockets, allowing me to compartmentalize my life (baby wipes in one pocket, lip gloss in another). But after seeing a few friends stylishly navigate motherhood with a minimalist tote in tow, I’m jumping onto the bandwagon.

Here are a few of my favorite choices for ethical totes (clockwise from left).

Lori Color Block Tote — Nisolo. $178
I’ve been eyeing Nisolo’s leather totes wistfully for some time. The color blocking adds an interesting but classic visual detail. Made ethically by artisans in Peru. (Disclosure: my husband occasionally works with Nisolo. But I still don’t have one of these fantastic bags!)

Mamuye Tote — fashionABLE. $178
This newly launched tote from fashionABLE has been lighting up my Instagram feed, especially after Minka Kelly was photographed carrying it. Handcrafted in Ethiopia; purchase supports the employment of women in sustainable businesses.

Ashoka Organic Cotton Tote — Raven & Lily. $35
Considering I have the unfortunate habit of ruining leather purses by transporting water bottles in them, I might consider something like this organic cotton bag (also a good vegan option!). Fairly made at a workshop in India.

Makundi Stripe Tote — Nkuku. $44 (ships from UK)
Nkuku’s Pottery Barn-like aesthetics combined with fair trade ethics mean beautiful, sustainable homewares and accessories. Their jute totes are adorable and currently on sale. Nkuku is a members of  the British Association of Fair Trade Shops.

Mero Tote — Aura Que. $83 (ships from UK)
I love the versatility of this tote from Aura Que, which is reversible and includes a detachable shoulder strap. Made in Nepal under fair trade working conditions.

What’s your bag of choice for getting through the day? We’d love to see it! Leave a link in the comments or tag a pic with #fairfashionfri.
