As my husband seeks to update his work wardrobe, I thought I would do him a favor and compile a list of affordable, ethical clothing options for men….only to find that the “affordable” part of that is quite elusive.
There are some good options out there for men’s clothing — some under $100, some most definitely not. Here are a few of my favorite finds so far.
- Everlane is a great place to start for shirts. Their Oxford shirts are reasonably priced and made in Los Angeles.
- UK-based retailer People Tree has some more formal work wear, such as blazers and dress slacks. They are a bit pricey, but it’s hard to beat the Fair Trade pedigree.
- Bill’s Khakis includes an impressive range of made-in-the-USA men’s clothing. Once again, the ethical credentials come with a hefty price tag, but check the sale section for items under $100.
- Fair trade brands Indigenous and Fair Indigo carry a few men’s items such as sweaters and polos; keep an eye on these sites for sales and discount codes.
- For a casual workplace, chinos from Monkee Genes are a good staple.
- Round out a work look with socks from PACT Apparel or American-made Zkano.
- Don’t forget a bag! Check out sweatshop-free Esperos backpacks and the artisan-crafted briefcases from Mission Lazarus.
What are your secret sources for ethical men’s fashion? What’s missing from the market?

The thing I’ve had the hardest time finding are brown dress socks. You wouldn’t think it would be that hard. PACT has packages of black socks, or packages of mixed colors that include one pair of brown, but you can’t buy a lot of brown socks. zkano doesn’t appear to have any brown socks. They have a few striped socks that are mostly brown-ish, and that can be fun… But I just need a good supply of plain brown socks to wear with my standard issue office khakis and brown shoes. Apparently that’s a really difficult request. [rolls eyes]
An no sooner do I make the above comment, and PACT puts a set of brown-only socks on their site!
Hurrah!
