Recently a dear friend asked me about fair trade and ethical sources for children’s clothing, and I didn’t have much to tell her. Inspired by her hopes of finding children’s clothing not made by child or slave labor, I’ve started watching for ethical brands featuring items for kids.
I found some great fair trade brands through Rage Against the Minivan’s post on ethical kids clothing. Kristen mentions the sticker shock that happens when we compare the price of sustainable clothes to items from conventional retailers (yes!) and reveals that many flash sale sites like Zulily carry fair trade brands. Check out her post for her terrific clothing finds.
I’ve gathered some of my favorite sustainable pieces in this post. Most of these prices are higher than what I usually pay for children’s clothing (okay, let’s be honest, my kids’ grandmothers buy all of their clothes). However, I’m hoping to gradually work in some ethical items as our budget and needs allow.
Honorable mention goes to aDARable, based in my hometown of Nashville. I’m excited to hear that their line of fair trade girls’ clothing will be featured in Nashville Fashion Week!
