Layers a Plenty

Do you know what I love about cooler weather? Layers. I love layering my wardrobe. Leggings, scarves, tanks, boots — everything I need to feel stylish and warm.

Lately we’ve had unusually cold weather here in Nashville, and I’ve amped up my layer game. So when ModCloth asked me about my favorite ways to layer, I was so there.

The jeans look is what I would wear for a typical “mom” day (okay, when I’m not wearing yoga pants). I turn to dark colors to help me feel cozy on a chilly day, so I would start with a black tank and then add a gray Breton-striped shirt. Wintery temps call for an extra layer, so a drapey black cardigan provides warmth without the bulk. I like to brighten up my outfits with dashes of color and whimsical accessories — in this case, the Alice tote and the telescope pendant add some fun to the dark winter colors.

For date nights and girls’ nights out, I like jewel tones mixed with sophisticated black. Nashville Novembers generally are mild enough that I can wear a cute, flippy skirt as long as I add something like these Basically Amazing socks to keep me warm. A breezy, brightly-colored top like this Strive to Thrive blouse may normally be reserved for summer, but it can do double duty with a tank underneath and a cozy cardigan on top. (A stylist friend once told me keep the bottom of the cardigan buttoned to define my waist — love it! You can find more cardigans from ModCloth here.)

I’m showing a lot of ModCloth love this week. I feel like they make it fun to stock my closet with ethical, affordable basics, and these pieces are no exception. Everything featured is made here in the USA and priced under $60.

However you like to layer this fall (or spring — shoutout to my Aussie readers!), whether you shop fair trade, USA-made, thrift stores, or your own closet, I wish you comfort, coziness, and fun!
