So…..Nashville schools are only open for a half day tomorrow due to the extreme temperatures.
[scratches head in confusion]
This seems really odd to me. Is it really too hot for students to learn? Are there not enough fans and air conditioners to keep the classrooms cool? The East Nashville listserve is abuzz with opinions from parents and teachers. Apparently, most Metro school buses don’t have air conditioning, and some people are wondering if that is the main point of concern.
But here’s what strikes me as strange —
Why now? Why did they decide to do this now, when the days are forecasted to be less scorching than they were last week? Why didn’t we see school canceled last Wednesday, when the temperature got up to something like 104 degrees?
To me, this seems like a late effort to appease worried parents.
Weird.
UPDATE: Monday, 12:oopm
Tuesday also will be a half day for Metro Nashville schools.
Last Friday, a student at Hume-Fogg was transported by ambulance to a hospital after become ill due to the heat.
It’s because of the large amount of buses without air conditioning. A friend of mine wrote on the La Vergne blog that his buddy’s bus was 132 degrees on the inside on Friday. The afternoons are a nightmare on the buses.
my wife the teacher of course is glad glad glad, but truthfully, the heat in the un-air-conditioned portables (nashville has a LOT of portables) and schools like Hume Fogg were becoming unbearable and dangerous in the afternoon. I think this is a prudent move.
Yeah, pretty much a way to avoid getting sued. Williamson is still having full days and I assume Sumner and Wilson are too. Do they have air conditioned buses? As many williamson buses as I drive by, you would think I would have noticed…
And the sad thing is as far as the state is concerned this is considered long enough to count as a full day of school so you know darn well they won’t make up any time…so hey, focus on education as usual…arrgh.
Why don’t they just start later? In MN where I’m from (a wee bit north of here *L*) we started around Labor Day. Of course, this year, will it matter anyway????
