Mantel with Garland

Garland

I’ve been hoping to incorporate ethical pieces into my home decor. When Ten Thousand Villages sent me their Jolly Bells Garland, I knew it would be a great fit for a winter mantel scene.

The Nester is one of my favorite interior design writers, and Myquillyn’s advice to “shop your house” when redecorating is wonderful inspiration, not to mention good for a budget. I had so much fun finding just the right pieces to complement the bell garland — rosemary from my garden, some candlesticks and a glass pitcher that were long-ago gifts, plus a lovely Christmas print from She Reads Truth created just the right feel.

I loved the sound of the bells as I hung them over the mantel, and the glitter is a fun touch, but my favorite thing about the garland is knowing its history. Crafted from recycled metal, the garland is created by artisans in India through fair trade partner Asha Handicraft Association. Non-profit Asha has worked with Ten Thousand Villages for over 40 years, providing direct purchases and advance payment to craftspeople as well as educational and health assistance.
