Late winter in Nashville tends to be rather dreary. Lots of rain and weeks of temperatures just slightly too cold for outdoor play. I often find myself searching for activities the kids and I can do together. They like noise and mess; I like quiet and order. Finding something to keep us all engaged can be a trial.

Enter Green Kid Crafts. I signed up for a two-month trial of Green Kid Crafts through Stonyfield’s soon-to-be-defunct rewards program. Each month during the subscription, Green Kid Crafts sends a box of 3 or 4 eco-friendly crafts straight to my door.

When I first opened the box of crafts, I was impressed with the “green” factor. The crafts include plant-based plastics and recycled paper and felt, and the instruction sheets double as games and coloring sheets so they can be reused.

The first box we received was the Food Adventures Box. It included kits to make a tile coaster, grow organic basil and alfalfa sprouts, and create a fishing game. The crafts are made for kids 3 to 8 years old. I planted the basil and sprout seeds with both boys, but I let Ian create the tile coaster as a “big kid” project during David’s naptime. I’m saving the fishing  game for the next day of boredom.

I think my favorite thing about Green Kid Crafts is that I feel like a better mom when I’m using the craft kit. It’s not that the kit makes me superior in any way — it’s that it keeps me focused on the kids. Instead of folding laundry and washing dishes non-stop, I see the craft box on the shelf and remember to take a few minutes to have fun with the boys. Bonus — so far the projects have been interesting for me, too. I find myself dusting off my old brain cells and sharing art history and science lessons with the kids while we play.

A monthly subscription to Green Kid Crafts is $19.95 a month. That’s not in our budget as a regular item, but I can see myself ordering the occasionally box for fun (or for when Daddy goes out of town). They offer individual boxes for $29.95, and individual crafts also are for sale on their website. Best part — there are gift subscriptions available for 3, 6, and 12 months, so these boxes make a great addition to wishlists as well.

Can’t wait to try Green Kid Crafts? They’ll send a $10 coupon to all of their Facebook fans when they hit 10,000.
