Happy Halloween, friends!

I’ll admit that we skipped the fair trade candy this year, instead opting to hand out bubbles, rings, fangs, and other non-edible goodies.

I did aim for simple and sustainable with costumes. When my kids announced that they wanted to be a kitty and a puppy, we headed to thrift stores to assemble something fun.

Goodwill provided gray sweatpants, gray hats, and some faux fur scarves perfect for tails and ears. I used gray t-shirts from the boys’ closets and added details with felt we already owned. The total for both costumes was about $16, including some facepaint I bought to complete the look.

I spent a bit too long obsessively sewing tabby stripes on the back of Ian’s kitty shirt, eventually realizing I needed to call it done and deem the costumes “good enough.” And they are! They’re just the right combination of comfy, fun, and warm for tonight’s festivities.

I’m hoping for plenty of chocolate (for me!) in my kids’ candy bags tonight, even better if it’s fair trade! What are your favorite Halloween treats?
